There is no way that Christians,

in a private capacity, can do

so much to promote the work

of God and advance the

Kingdom of Christ as by prayer.

CHAPTER 12

The Kingdom Room

FOR YOURS IS THE KINGDOM

As Christians, you and I are citizens of the Kingdom of God. It’s a Kingdom that belongs to the Lord, and we are His sons and daughters. My friend Peter from Great Britain, who serves on our international leadership team, clearly understands “kingdoms.” As a British citizen, he is a subject of a kingdom, with the present sovereign being Queen Elizabeth II. Christians live as citizens of the Kingdom of God, and as subjects of this Kingdom, we receive the benefits of Kingdom living.

“Yours is the Kingdom” refers not as much to the place where God rules as to the presence and power of God’s actual rule. As God exercises His authority on earth, the Kingdom of God is here. Jesus proclaimed, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news” (Mark 1:15 HCSB, emphasis added). When we recognize God’s rule over our lives, we take on values that are fundamentally different than those of the world. Thus we make an about turn; we repent and live our lives in a new direction, pointing toward God’s Kingdom.

What does it mean to be a child of the King, a citizen of the Kingdom? Charles Sheldon wrote a little book called In His Steps describing a group of Christians who decide to take seriously the claims of Jesus Christ on their lives. They try to live out their faith in practical ways, so they apply a test to all of their decisions and behavior. When they are faced with decisions or with issues of behavior, they agree to ask themselves the question, “What would Jesus do?” Not surprisingly, as a result of asking themselves that question, their behavior begins to change and they begin to make a difference for Jesus Christ in their world.1

Like Jesus, both our words and our works should declare the reality of the Kingdom. We live out this reign each day by living as an active member of the community of Jesus—loving our enemies, forgiving those who wrong us, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and confronting sin.

DECLARE THAT THE KINGDOM IS THE LORD’S!

As citizens of God’s Kingdom, we have the privilege to come before the King of kings and Lord of lords, to enjoy communion with our Father who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus. He has chosen us before the creation of the world, predestined us to be adopted as His sons and daughters, redeemed us and revealed great things to us (see Eph. 1:3-8). God is excited about His Kingdom!

The “Kingdom room” is a place to declare, “Yours is the Kingdom!” When we declare it, we build up our confidence in God and His authority in the world and in our lives.
